The Creating People Places professional practice seminar attracted a diverse group of housing researchers, practitioners, specialists and tenants to share views on concept, strategy and approach for creating interesting and engaging places.
Setting the scene were Bernie Coates Research Fellow with City Futures UNSW who explored the history and future of renewal in social housing in NSW followed by Dr Tony Gilmour from Housing Action Network delved into placemaking in contemporary Australian stock transfer projects. Kylie Legge from Place Partners provided an insightful look at their collaborative approach to visioning and creating people places, with relevant alignment to the social housing context. After lunch the tenant panel led by Dare Kavanagh provided delegates with vital appreciation of the tenant’s perspective in regards to what makes their community engaging and interesting. Rounding the program out, Debra Allan proudly showcased the Compass Connect place making initiative as part of their GROW Program.
The AHI wishes to thank all speakers, tenant representatives and delegates for making this event a success. We welcome suggestions for other topics that may be explored in the one-day seminar format.
