Welcome to the October edition of the HousingPeople newsletter. The Australasian Housing Institute is pleased to advise that the Australasian Housing Institute's Annual General Meeting this year will be held on Tuesday, 28th November 2017 at 6pm at the Shangri-La Hotel Sydney. Don't miss this opportunity to network with high-profile American colleagues from NAHRO and learn best practices from the Nothern Hemisphere. 

The Award season continues with another inspiring reception being held in Canberra on the 17th October. Congratulations to all award winners in Australian Capital Territory! Click here to access photos from the ceremony. The Australasian Awards Gala Dinner will be held on Wednesday, 29th November 2017 in Sydney from 7.30pm. We're pleased to announce that Pru Goward MP, Minister for Family and Community Services and Minister for Social Housing, has generously accepted our invitation to attend the reception night. Join us at the reception to celebrate the success of social and affordable industry peers and to congratulate the worthy winners personally!

In October we continued the inaugural Housing Excellence Showcase, a series of special events showcasing some of the standout achievements from the 2017 AHI Professional Excellence in Housing Awards. The second Housing Excellence Showcase event was held in Adelaide on 24 October and highlighted the story of success of the Award winning asset management program UNO.

The September joint edition of Parity and HousingWORKS "Current Issues in Housing Tenure" has been circulated to subscribers. Digital articles are now available online to AHI Members. Click here to access the articles online. Please provide your feedback on this or previous editions of HousingWORKS. AHI members may claim 10 CPD points for each HousingWORKS review to assist in meeting the continuing professional development requirements for Certified Housing Professional accreditation.

AHI Annual General Meeting

Run at the end of every year, the Annual General Meeting provides AHI Members with an opportunity to participate in the discussion about the strategic direction of your association. At this meeting new members of the Board will be appointed, annual reports such as the Directors' Report, Audited Financial Statements and the President's address will be presented. We welcome all AHI members, friends and colleagues to join us in the discussion about the strategic direction of your association in 2017.

The meeting will be followed by the networking event and Q&A discussion with our special guests from The National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO). Don't miss this unique opportunity to listen how our American colleagues inspire and engage professionals in housing, community development, finance, government, social services and residents to create attainable and sustainable housing and communities for vulnerable families and individuals.

News from our Members


Appointment of General Manager Tauranga - Vicki McLaren

Vicki McLaren has been appointed to the position of General Manager Tauranga for Accessible Properties.  Vicki will start with Accessible Properties in November and take over from Andrew Wilson when he retires in late December.

Vicki is currently the Manager Organisational Development for Wellington City Council, where she has been responsible for driving a number of initiatives including development of the organisation’s People and Capability strategy. While in this role Vicki has maintained a strong active interest and links to social housing including promoting sector capability development and being on the Board of the Australasian Housing Institute.

Vicki has significant social housing experience previously being the Council’s Manager City Housing, where she was responsible for the management of their 2,200 unit social housing portfolio and leadership of the City Housing Business Unit.

Having developed and led a team of highly successful social housing professionals through periods of significant change, including the integration and successfully delivery of what to date is one of New Zealand’s largest social housing regeneration programme, Vicki brings strong leadership, customer-focus and significant operational housing management skills to her new role that will benefit Accessible Properties as we continue to build our organisation and deliver our strategy.

Vicki will be a member of the Accessible Properties Senior Leadership Team and lead the Tauranga operation’s transition from the set-up phase, into the ongoing delivery of an effective, innovative, and efficient customer-focussed social housing service.
