New Zealand AHI Awards Reception

This year’s New Zealand awards dinner formed part of a successful Community Housing Aotearoa’s Annual Conference in Wellington. The large number of attendees enjoyed catching up with colleagues and making new friends over a delicious meal and fine wine.
The amazing work being done across the sector was evident with the number and quality of this year’s nominations. Lisa Woolley, Vision West’s CEO took out the Outstanding Achievement Award and Housing New Zealand’s Canterbury Earthquake Recovery team were the well-deserved recipients of the Excellence in Social Housing Award.
Another highlight was the presentation of four Certified Housing Professional certificates – hopefully the first of many to come. A big thank you to AHI President Donald Proctor as well as the Award Judges and Presenters who did and amazing job.

Insights from NAHRO Summer Conference

Between the 14 and 17 October 2015 I had a great opportunity to attend the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) conference in Los Angeles, California representing the Australasian Housing Institute (AHI) in  my capacity as the NSW Director. The AHI have recently signed an MoU with NAHRO agreeing to share information and promote each other's work. As an initial token of our partnership NAHRO offered free access to two of their three big annual conferences, this was their summer one and had over 1,500 attendees.
As well as Australia there were also representatives from Canada, Hong Kong, France, England, Scotland, South Africa and the Netherlands.  There were over 60 sessions on various housing themes and a very large exhibition hall with numerous products and innovative ideas on display.
The event started off with registration and attendance at a 'First Time delegates' workshop where we were welcomed by the CEO of NAHRO, Saul N Ramirez Jr, and the President at that time, Preston Prince. I also accepted an invitation from the International Research and Global Exchange Committee to a fantastic dinner, open air in the centre of LA, and meet and greet of the committee, staff and officials from NAHRO as well as an opportunity to befriend the other international delegates. A big thank you to the then Vice President Elizabeth S. Glenn and the now Vice President, Julie, both for making me feel very welcome.
The next day began with an introduction from Robert Pearson who is Vice President of the Pacific SW region. We were then welcomed by the hosts, the Housing Authority's of LA and LA County followed by the Mayor of LA, Eric Garcetti and Mayor of the LA County, Michael D. Antonovich. We then had a powerful talk from Earvin 'Magic' Johnson on his Enterprise which has made him the most powerful African American businessman and how he uses it to bring business and money to poorer American urban neighbourhoods. I then attended workshops on financial models to create innovative supported housing and a session on 50 years after the Watts Rebellion. This was a famous event where residents fought back against LA police brutality and how, now, the police have developed a community model in the area. I finished off the day as a guest of the NAHRO Board of Governors event held in the Grammy Museum.
The next morning I found myself at the session on Habitat III and the advisory role that Elizabeth S. Glenn has to the UN and policy that NAHRO will be seeking for it to adapt. There was then a further plenary hosted by the President, Preston Prince, which awarded the Elizabeth B Wells Memorial Award and the John D. Lange International Award. We then had a rousing speech from Maxine Moore Waters who is the U.S. Representative for California's 43rd congressional district who is a longstanding social housing advocate. I followed this up with workshops on Public Private Partnerships, Supportive Housing and Public Relation strategies. In the evening I was invited to the Farewell party for the outgoing President, Preston Prince.
Day three started off with a workshop on Breaking the Cycle of Incarceration and Homelessness and then engaging residents in neighbourhood revitalisation. The day finished with lunch and a final plenary where the new President, Stephen W. Merritt, took over the realm along with the new Vice Presidents making up the Board of Governors. I had a great time and met some very knowledgeable and interesting housing professionals.
