Issue: November 2017

Welcome to the November edition of the HousingPeople newsletter. It is great to see so many members and colleagues attending the National Housing Conference in Sydney. The Award season culminated with the Australasian Housing Awards Reception last night, which was a tremendous success. Once again we would like to congratulate all the worthy winners!

With Christmas just around the corner, we believe it's the perfect time to reminisce about the past and make plans for the future. In November we released the 2016/17 Annual Report and had an opportunity to review our achievements at the Annual General Meeting this week in Sydney. Now it's time to create an event calendar for 2018 and we invite you to have your say in our planning session by participating in our Member Survey. Please share with us what events and activities you'd like to see next year. Everyone who completes the survey will have the chance to enter the draw to win 1 of 4 $100 vouchers to use towards any AHI event in 2018.

In December we are hosting networking lunches with special guests from the USA, NAHRO, in SydneyMelbourne and Wellington. Don't miss these opportunities to network with high-profile American colleagues and learn the best practices from the Nothern Hemisphere.

AHI Annual General Meeting 2017

The AHI held its Annual General Meeting at the Shangri-La Hotel Sydney on the 28th of November. Andrew Davis, AHI President addressed a crowd of around 50 housing professionals and provided an update on the AHI’s achievements over the last 12 months including the release of the Annual Report. Andrew thanked directors for their ongoing commitment to the board and welcomed newly appointed Directors.

The Board for 2017/18 comprises:

  • Andrew Davis, President
  • Julie Blake, South Australian Director
  • Chris Chaplin, Victorian Director
  • Francis Brazil, NSW Director
  • Su Groome, Western Australian Director
  • Lisa Roberts, Tasmanian Director
  • Vicki McLaren, New Zealand Director
  • John Shevlin, ACT Director
  • Bernard Wilson, Queensland Director
  • Michelle Walker, Northern Territory Director

This year we say goodbye to several of our retiring Directors - Frances Paterson-Fleider Director QLD, Faye Minty Director ACT, Tim Chatfield Director – Indigenous Housing and Andrew Clapham Director NT. Through their varied roles, they have contributed immensely to the success of the Institute, helping to advance careers of housing professionals.

With the AGM formalities completed, the guests enjoyed the thought-provoking panel and Q&A discussion with our special guests from The National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO).
Rebecca Pinkstone, NSW Branch Chair, led a conversation that touched numerous topics including the brief history of the social housing in the USA and the latest phase of NSW Social Housing Management Transfer program. We wish our colleagues from the USA all the best in the new year and sincerely thank them for the presented gifts.

Following the close of the evening, members and guests enjoyed a glass of champagne to celebrate another successful year at the Institute.
