AHI NEW BOARD DIRECTORS

In this edition we continue introducing new AHI Board Members, who joined the Institute at the Annual General Meeting at the end of 2017. In March we welcome Michelle Walker, NT Director. Stay tuned for the John Shevlin's bio in the upcoming edition of HousingPEOPLE and click here to see the full AHI Governing Board.

Michelle Walker, Director, Northern Territory

Michelle Walker is an experienced Executive Director with the Northern Territory Government and has spent 17 years working to deliver a high quality public housing service for some of the most socially and economically disadvantaged groups in Australia.

An ongoing challenge for in the Northern Territory is the significant shortfall in homes for Aboriginal people living in very remote regions and this leads to very high rates of overcrowding and consequent health and social problems. These are places where people love to belong and yet struggle to thrive.

Despite these significant challenges, Michelle is motivated by a passion for recognising the strength in culture and the incredible resilience demonstrated by elders and young leaders as they continue to rise above their circumstances.

It is increasingly recognised that housing along with other essential public service needs to be delivered in a culturally sensitive and appropriate way and community engagement is key to this approach. Michelle is motivated to draw out and build on the strength of culture and community in developing responses to what can at times seem an overwhelming challenge.

Joining the Board of AHI builds on her long history in the social housing sector and commitment to growing stronger families through stable and appropriate accommodation options. In this role she is excited about the potential for contributing to and benefiting from the collective knowledge and experience of housing providers across Australia and New Zealand.

The welcome event of the inaugural AHI Mentoring Program was held in NSW on Thursday 22 March 2018 at the SGCH office and allowed mentee/mentor pairs to meet face-to-face and to connect with other pairs and the AHI NSW branch committee. Over morning tea, mentee/mentor pairs discussed ideas for managing their mentoring relationship and the process to get the most out of this experience. Congratulations to all matched mentors and mentees!

AHI's NSW Branch Committee member and Senior Project Officer, Department of Family and Community ServicesNicholas Loder, said: “AHI mentoring provides opportunities to test assumptions, challenge ideas and workshop strategies to address career, work or life related goals with a trusted, confidential fellow traveller. It is your time to sort out the important from the urgent, to see where extra skills are needed or just to let go of aspects in your life that are not working for you. Mentoring gives you agency to be your own change maker.”

We sincerely thank the AHI NSW branch committee, SGCH, and our exclusive sponsor, Blooming HR and wish all participants a great mentoring experience.
