Member Networking Events

Member Networking Event in Melbourne

A meeting of Victorian members was held on Thursday 18 February 2016 at the offices of Housing Choices Australia in the Melbourne CBD. There are currently seven Branch Committee members but there is always room for more if anyone is keen to be involved. The Committee plans to meet at least quarterly. We will be advising members of dates and times of Branch Committee meetings so that any of you who would like to hear more about what we are doing can come along if you are able.
We are already planning our first Victorian activity for the year in early May - a networking breakfast for housing officers with an inspiring  guest speaker to be confirmed. We are also working with the head office on a professional practice seminar tentatively targeted for July.
We look forward to meeting all of our Victorian members at events during this year. In the meantime, we encourage you to familiarise yourselves with the AHI's professional recognition and awards programs. We would like to see greater participation in these by the Victorian members.
We hope it is an interesting and rewarding year for all of you.

Acting AHI VIC Branch Chair

AHI Networking Breakfast with Paul Vevers: Future Directions for Social Housing in NSW

On Tuesday 23 February more than forty keen housing professionals, from 7 am onward, arrived in Parramatta for a Breakfast with Paul Vevers, Deputy Secretary FaCS. Paul came to share his thoughts, and that of the government, on what the paper ‘Future Directions for NSW Social Housing’ will mean to the sector.
Among the participants were two former AHI Presidents, Donald Proctor and Tony Gilmour, as well as the Chair of the NSW Branch, Rebecca Pinkstone. Unis Goh, a distinguished NSW AHI member had her Disability council hat on and Francis Brazil, the AHI NSW Director, Mc’d the proceedings.
The morning was silver sponsored by Kinetics and Lake Maintenance, while Todd Selby representing our Gold sponsor, Broadspecturm, welcomed us all.
After a great breakfast Paul gave us a detailed insight into the document as well as expectations from FaCS and the Minister. He then did a Q&A. Some of the key highlights:
  • Its key that each tender and partnership will need to show the underlying goal to achieve – Family stability, education and employment outcomes;
  • Each organisation needs to have a strong strategy and decide what work to take on. The main thing is that everyone is short of is ‘time’;
  • The case for transfer to the community housing is to achieve diversity in housing solutions, local knowledge and financial (CRA, borrowing and philanthropic);
  • The final number will see the Community Housing sector managing 35% of 140k homes, a 22k increase in social housing;
  • 900 units in limbo and not transferred from previous transfers will be remedied;
  • There is no intention for the department to take 10 years to achieve this and will be done as quickly as possible (however, some major developments e.g. Waterloo, will be 15 years);
  • The Social Housing Fund is brand new money of $1.1 billion creating 3,000 new homes. This hasn’t been seen since GFC. There will be 500 new homes in Sydney metro. This is run through the Treasury and not FaCS
  • It is out of FaCS’ control, however Paul feels the CH sector should choose their own staff – there is a whole of Government approach to this situation.
Following requests from the audience, Paul has agreed to meet with social housing colleagues in Newcastle. The date and details of the event will be announced soon - don't forget to check our PD Portal regularly or follow us on Twitter or LinkedIn
Summarised by Francis Brazil, the AHI NSW Director
